Automatic driving lessons in Chester
Calm, patient tuition in a dual control automatic. £38 an hour, picked up from your door, right across CH1 to CH7.

No clutch. No stalling. No panic at the lights.
Learning in an automatic removes the one thing that swallows most of a beginner's first ten hours. Instead of fighting a biting point on a hill in Connah's Quay, you spend that time on the things the examiner actually marks you on: observation, road position, judgement and speed.
- Junctions and roundabouts make sense sooner, because your feet are not busy
- Nervous and anxious learners settle faster with fewer things to think about
- An automatic licence covers electric cars, which is most of what is sold new
- Hill starts around Deeside stop being the thing you dread
What I teach
Four things, taught properly, all in the same automatic car.
-
Beginner automatic lessons
Your first time behind the wheel, from the car park to the roundabout. We build cockpit drill, moving off and stopping, then junctions, and only add traffic when you are ready for it.
-
Refresher and nervous driver lessons
You have a licence but the confidence has gone, or you are switching from manual to automatic. No test pressure, no rush. We work at the pace that suits you on roads you actually need to use.
-
Intensive and semi intensive courses
Several hours a week over a short period, built around your test date. Useful if you have a deadline, a job offer, or you are home from university for the summer.
-
Pass Plus and motorway lessons
After the test. Motorway driving, night driving, dual carriageways and rural roads around Cheshire and Flintshire, so your first solo drive is not your first hard drive.

Questions people ask before booking
How much are automatic driving lessons in Chester?
Lessons are £38 per hour, and that is the same rate everywhere I cover, from Chester city centre out to Connah's Quay. Block bookings bring it down: 5 hours for £185, 10 hours for £360 and 20 hours for £700. There is no joining fee and no charge for picking you up.
Do you teach manual lessons?
No. JD Driving School is automatic only. It means one car, one gearbox and one way of teaching, and it lets you spend your lesson time on observation, road position and judgement instead of on clutch control.
Which areas do you cover?
Chester, Deeside, Queensferry, Connah's Quay and Mancot, plus the surrounding villages. In postcode terms that is CH1 through to CH7, covering Blacon, Upton, Saltney, Broughton, Shotton, Hawarden, Ewloe, Flint, Buckley and Mold.
How many lessons will I need to pass?
The DVSA figure most instructors quote is around 45 hours of professional tuition plus about 22 hours of private practice. That is an average, not a target. Some people need less, plenty need more, and after the first two or three hours I will give you an honest estimate rather than a sales pitch.
Where will I take my driving test?
Most pupils test at the Chester driving test centre on Telford Court, Dunkirk Trading Estate, CH1 6LT. Lessons include the road types the Chester examiners use, including the A55 and A494 dual carriageways, the ring road roundabouts and the rural lanes out towards Saughall.
Is an automatic licence worse than a manual one?
It is a different licence, not a lesser one. An automatic licence lets you drive any automatic or electric car, which is now most of what is sold new in the UK. If you later want to drive a manual you can take a separate manual test. For a lot of people the automatic route means passing sooner and driving more calmly.
Do you offer intensive courses?
Yes. Intensive and semi intensive courses are arranged around your theory pass and your practical test date, usually several hours a week rather than one lesson a week. Get in touch with your dates and I will tell you honestly whether the timescale is realistic.
How do I book my first lesson?
Call or text 07884 437 694, or send the enquiry form on the contact page. Tell me where you are, whether you have your provisional licence yet, and when you are free. I will come back with the next available slots.
